Gimkit

Gimkit is an interactive learning platform that enables educators to boost classroom engagement through gamified assessments (Gimkit, 2021, para. 1). Gimkit allows teachers to create and host quizzes while students participate using their own devices. This tool is centered on formative assessment, making it easy for teachers to track progress while students learn. When students answer questions correctly, they earn in-game currency called “cash,” which can be used to purchase power-ups and other upgrades during gameplay. Gimkit offers a wide variety of premade question sets, or teachers can design their own to fit the specific needs of their class. By transforming traditional review into an engaging and competitive game, Gimkit helps increase student motivation, focus, and overall learning excitement.

Types of Learning

Gimkit is built on the principles of Behaviorism, which emphasizes learning through reinforcement and interaction with an environment. The tool uses immediate feedback and rewards to shape student behavior. For example, when students answer questions correctly in Gimkit, they earn virtual money that can be reinvested into the game for power-ups or advantages. This cycle of reward and reinforcement motivates learners to stay engaged and continue practicing content, encouraging mastery through repetition and competition.

Ease of Use

We gave Gimkit a 5-star rating for ease of use. The platform is straightforward to navigate for both teachers and students. After signing up with an email, teachers can quickly create question sets or use existing ones, then launch a live game with minimal setup. Students only need a game code to join, making it quick and accessible in classroom settings. Gimkit also includes clear instructions and a smooth interface, although like Blooket, it lacks a comprehensive FAQ section. Instead, Gimkit offers helpful tutorials and guides to support teachers getting started.

Privacy

We gave Gimkit a 3-star rating for privacy. To create an account, users (who must be over 13, or younger with verified parental or school consent) need to provide personally identifiable information such as name and email. Additionally, data such as device details, browser type, and usage activity may be collected. Gimkit’s privacy policy outlines what information is gathered and how it’s used. While users cannot fully opt out of data collection, schools and parents can request deletion of student data to remain compliant with COPPA and FERPA. Gimkit makes an effort to limit the amount of personal data students provide when simply joining games, requiring only a username in those cases.

Accessibility

We gave Gimkit a 2-star rating for accessibility. Currently, Gimkit does not provide a clear accessibility statement, and its features show limitations for students with disabilities. The platform requires the use of a mouse or touchpad, meaning it cannot be fully navigated with just a keyboard. This creates barriers for students relying on alternative input methods. In addition, Gimkit does not appear to have built-in support for screen readers, text-to-speech, or speech-to-text functionality, which would make the tool more inclusive for learners with visual or auditory impairments. Accessibility could be significantly improved if Gimkit integrated assistive technologies and provided adaptable features to meet the diverse needs of all students.

ISTE Standards for Students

Empowered Learner

  • Students receive immediate feedback when answering questions correctly or incorrectly, reinforcing understanding and highlighting areas for growth.

  • Gimkit allows students to demonstrate what they know (pre-assessments) and measure progress (post-assessments) through different game modes and question sets.

  • Students can customize their gameplay strategies using earned points or “cash” to buy upgrades, which encourages ownership of learning.

  • Both teachers and students can track progress over time through reports and performance summaries.

Global Collaborator

  • Gimkit offers collaboration opportunities by allowing students to work in teams during certain game modes.

  • With just a game code, students can join from anywhere, making it possible to collaborate or compete with peers outside the classroom in real-time.

  • These collaborative elements help students build communication skills and experience teamwork in a gamified learning environment.

Gimkit Overview Video

Dr. Ruben Puentedura’s SAMR model provides a framework for evaluating how technology is integrated into the classroom. By examining Gimkit through this lens, educators can better understand its potential to transform teaching and learning.

Here is an example of how Gimkit fits within the SAMR model:

  • Substitution: Students use Gimkit to answer quiz questions digitally instead of paper-and-pencil worksheets.

  • Augmentation: Gimkit provides instant feedback, and students can play games from home or school, making practice more flexible and engaging.

  • Modification: Gimkit introduces unique features like “power-ups” and “cash earnings” that let students choose strategies and engage in different interactive modes, extending learning beyond simple Q&A.

  • Redefinition: Students can compete or collaborate with other classes in real time across the globe, redefining what classroom engagement and assessment can look like.

With technology advancing rapidly, tools like Gimkit highlight how digital platforms can enhance student motivation, reinforce knowledge, and open new ways to interact with content.

Learning Activities with Gimkit

Math

  • Students can engage in rapid-response games solving arithmetic problems, using in-game rewards to reinforce practice.

  • Teachers can design sets that cover fractions, geometry, or algebra concepts, and students earn “cash” for correct answers, which they reinvest strategically.

Science

  • Students may be quizzed on cell structures, the periodic table, or chemical compounds in interactive modes.

  • Gimkit can also be used for labeling diagrams or matching scientific terms with their definitions, reinforcing visual and conceptual understanding.

English/Language Arts

  • Teachers can create question sets on grammar, vocabulary, or literary analysis.

  • Students can identify sentence parts, synonyms/antonyms, or answer comprehension questions from assigned readings.

Social Studies

  • Students can practice identifying states, capitals, and world countries.

  • Gimkit also supports historical timelines, key event recall, and matching leaders or places to specific historical contexts.

Leveling Up

  • Students can design their own question sets as a class project, encouraging them to research and create quizzes for peers.

  • Collaborative activities may include building a shared bank of practice questions and hosting review games for other classes or family members.

Using Gimkit for Formative Assessment

One of Gimkit’s strengths is its value for formative assessment. For students, immediate feedback highlights which questions they got wrong, allowing them to identify areas needing review. For teachers, post-game reports display overall class performance, revealing which concepts students struggled with most. This enables instructors to adjust lessons, reteach material, and ensure students achieve a deeper understanding before progressing to new topics.

How to Use Gimkit
